Invite new members to your workspace

There are a few ways of giving new people access to join your workspace:

  • Email an invitation to one person or several people at once
  • Share a custom invitation link to your workspace
  • Allow people to sign up using their email address

Who can send invitations?

Workspace owners and admins can invite new people to their workspace and they can allow their members (excluding guests) to send invitations as well. 

On the Free subscription, members are able to send invitations by default. On paid subscriptions, this permission must be enabled by a workspace owner or admin. If you’re an owner or admin, learn more about changing invitation permissions.


Send a new invitation

Invite members

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Invite people from the menu. On paid subscriptions, you can also invite guests (read how to do this below). 
  3. Send email invitations to one person or lots of people at once. Enter the email address and full name of the person you want to invite. Click Add another or Add many at once, if you like.
  4. Under Default channels, click Edit/add to select channels these invitees will automatically join. On paid subscriptions, you have the option to compose a custom message to make your invitations more personal.
  5. Click Send invitations to finish.

Note: Even if members are allowed to send invitations, only owners and admins can set default channels.


Invite guests

On the Standard subscription and above, only workspace owners and admins can invite multi-channel or single-channel guests:

Multi-channel guest

  1. Follow steps 1 to 3 under Inviting members.
  2. When asked, choose the number of channels that you want the guest to have access to. 
  3. Set a time limit for how long the guest will have access to your workspace.
  4. Once you’re ready, click Invite guests.

Single-channel guest

  1. Follow steps 1 to 3 under Inviting members.
  2. When asked, choose the one channel that you want the guest to have access to. 
  3. Set a time limit for how long the guest will have access to your workspace.
  4. Once you’re ready, click Invite guests.
  1. Swipe right to left to open the right sidebar.
  2. Tap Invite people.
  3. Enter email addresses or choose from Contacts stored in your device.
  4. Tap Send to finish.
  1. Tap the   overflow icon in the top right.
  2. Tap Invite members.
  3. Enter email addresses.
  4. Tap Send to finish.

 

Share an invitation link 

You can also create a unique link to share that anyone can use to join your workspace. You can decide whether you want the link to expire after a day, week, month or never.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Invite people from the menu.
  3. Select Members
  4. Click Get an invitation link to share.
  5. Choose when you want your link to expire from the options in the drop-down menu.
  6. Click Create invitation link.
  7. Click Copy and share the link with your future members! 


Allow email sign-up

Workspace owners can allow email sign-ups. This allows people with an email address from a specific domain (e.g. your company’s domain) to join a workspace without an invitation.

Before joining a workspace, we’ll send a validation link to each new member’s email address to verify their identity. Only those with an address at the workspace’s specified domains can create an account.

Manage pending invitations

On desktop, workspace owners and admins can view your workspace’s pending and accepted invitations and make changes if necessary.

Choose Revoke invitation to remove it from your list and prevent any delivered invitations from being used. Or select Resend invitation to deliver a new email invitation to the person’s inbox, in case it expired or got lost.

Here’s how to see who has and hasn’t accepted your invitation and how to either revoke or resend an invite:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Invite people from the menu.
  3. Click See pending and accepted invitations for your workspace.
  4. On the Pending invitations tab, click the  right arrow icon next to the invitation you want to view.
  5. Click Revoke invitation, Resend invitation or do nothing by closing the browser.


Invitation limits

You can send invitations to as many people as you like. Slack might limit the option to send more invitations if you’ve already sent a large number and few have been accepted. If you reach the invitation limit, any pending invitations you’ve already sent are still valid: you just won’t have the option to send more.

You can avoid reaching the limit by only sending invitations to people who have asked or who are approved to join your workspace. If you’ve reached a limit while trying to invite a large group of coworkers, please contact us.

Note: Revoking invitations will not lift the limit – it is based on the acceptance rate of invitations that have already been sent. 

Who can use this feature?
  • Workspace owners and admins can use this feature, and sometimes members.
  • Available on free and paid subscriptions.
