Create a shared channel on Enterprise Grid

In an Enterprise Grid Org, shared channels act as a bridge for connecting multiple workspaces together. For groups around the company who need to collaborate in Slack, this type of channel makes it possible.

Not an Enterprise customer? You can still use shared channels (beta) to connect with another company's Slack workspace!

Review the basics

  • Limited permissions
Members must have permission from an Org Owner or Admin to create, manage, or convert shared channels.
  • Share channels
Any channel (except for the #general channel) can be shared with another workspace in your Enterprise Grid Org. Members will see the  shared channel icon next to a shared channel's name.
  • Control access
The channel's creator will decide who has access when they share it. There are two options: either any workspace in the org or only certain ones.
  • Manage visibility
A shared channel can be public or private. A public shared channel can be accessed by anyone in your org. A private shared channel is limited to only the people you invite.

Note: Some apps and custom bots may not be available in shared channels. Get in touch with us for more information.

Create a shared channel

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Shared channels, then click New Shared Channel.
  3. Decide whether your shared channel should be public or private.
  4. Choose who to share the channel with: make it available to all workspaces in your org or only to specific ones.
  5. Name your shared channel. Include a brief description of what the channel is for, if you'd like.
  6. Click Create Shared Channel to finish.

Convert an existing channel

When you share an existing channel, anyone in the workspaces you select will be able to find and join it. Any channel (except for #general) can be shared with other workspaces in your org.

  1. Click the  gear icon to open the Channel Settings menu.
  2. Click Additional options....
  3. Select Share this channel with other workspaces.
  4. Decide who can access the channel and select Review Changes.
  5. Click Save Changes to finish.

Remove access to a shared channel

Because organizations change, who needs access to certain shared channels may evolve over time. Here's how members with permission can remove a workspace's access to a shared channel:

  1. Click the  gear icon to open the Channel Settings menu.
  2. Click Additional options....
  3. Choose Sharing settings for this channel.
  4. Select the workspaces you no longer wish to share the channel with.
  5. Click Review Changes.
  6. Click Save Changes to finish.
Who can use this feature?
  • Org Owners and Org Admins can give access to all members, but not guests.
  • Available on Enterprise Grid.
