Create a shared channel on Enterprise Grid
Enterprise Grid shared channels connect one or many unique workspaces in your organization. For different groups of people working together, shared channels make team communication cohesive, seamless, and efficient. Powerful!💥
Not an Enterprise customer? Workspaces on the Standard and Plus plans can use shared channels to communicate with another company’s Slack workspace. Read how to create shared channels (beta) on a workspace.
How they work
An Enterprise Grid
shared channel can be used by more than one workspace on your organization to get work done. The channel creator decides who has access: either a set of specific workspaces or all workspaces within the org. Enterprise Grid shared channels can also be
private so individual workspaces with access can work together in confidence.
💡 Note: Learn how Org Owners/Admins can Manage shared channel creation.
Please use care: It's not possible to remove workspaces from shared channels on Enterprise Grid at this time.
Create a shared channel
Only members with permission can create shared channels.
Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu.
Select Shared channels , then click New Shared Channel .
Choose who can access your shared channel. A public shared channel can be accessed by anyone on the organization, but a private shared channel is limited to only the people you invite to it.
Choose who to share the channel with. You can make it available to all workspaces in your organization or just to specific workspaces.
Give the shared channel a name. You can also include a brief description of what the channel is for.
Click Create Shared Channel to finish.
Tip: When a channel is shared with more than one workspace, all members will see the shared channel icon next to its name.
Convert an existing channel
Only members with permission can convert existing channels into shared channels. All channels except for your workspace's #general channel can be converted.
Click the gear icon to open the Channel Settings menu.
Click Additional options.... Select
Convert this channel to a shared channel. Decide who can access the shared channel. You can also update the channel name or add a channel purpose to let others know what the channel is for.
Click Convert to Shared Channel to finish.
Who can use this feature?
Org Owners and Org Admins can give access to all members except for Guests. Available on
Slack Enterprise Grid.
Apps and bots: Some apps and custom bots may not be available in shared channels. Get in touch with us for more information — we're happy to help!
