Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) — also known as Mobile Device Management (MDM) — gives organizations more control over how their company apps, networks, and devices are used and accessed on mobile.
Mobile security basics
If you’re interested in EMM, first connect with a participating Slack for EMM provider to learn more and set up your account. Currently, we work with several EMM providers including AirWatch, MobileIron, and Blackberry to verify our services are compatible.
System requirements for people using the Slack for EMM app are iOS 9 or later and Android 4.1 or later.
Turn on Enterprise Mobility Management
Contact our support team and let us know you’d like to turn on or change your mobile security settings for your organization.
Slack will assist with setting up mobile security for your organization, but here’s the information we’ll need from you:
🔏 Choose who is affected
By turning on EMM, only members on approved devices will be able to access workspaces on your organization. You can choose whether or not guests are affected.
- All members, excluding guests will be required to update to the Slack for EMM app. Guests will still be able to sign in from any device.
- All members in the organization will be required to update to the Slack for EMM app, and must use an approved device to access Slack.
✍🏼 Customize your message
When mobile security is turned on, affected members will have 72 hours to switch to the Slack for EMM app before their mobile sessions are ended.
All affected members will receive an email (as well as a Slackbot) message with details of what to expect:
- The key message that their company has just upgraded their mobile security to ensure Slack is managed consistently across approved mobile devices across the organization.
- The date and time when members will only be able to access Slack on approved devices, using the Slack for EMM app.
- Details on how to access the Slack for EMM app and a link to Slack’s Help Center article.
We provide space to add a custom message where you can tell us to include information about how to get the Slack for EMM app, links to an internal guide, or an email address to contact your company’s helpdesk.
Tip: Even though affected members have 72 hours to switch, prepare your company for these changes and communicate before turning on mobile security for your organization.
What members can expect
Switching to the Slack for EMM app
When mobile security is turned on, members will get both an email and a Slackbot message with details on how to set up Slack for EMM on their device.
Once installed, members can sign in using their single sign-on credentials. Members can still use the regular Slack app, but not for the Enterprise Grid organization that requires EMM.
Access from an unauthorized device
Once EMM is turned on, members attempting to sign in to your Enterprise Grid organization will see a screen letting them know they need to use an approved device.
Slack will automatically send the member an email with instructions from the custom message that you provided in the step above.
