Invite new members to your workspace

There are a few ways to give new people access to join your workspace: send them an invitation by email or allow them to signup using their email address.

Send a new invitation

By default, only Workspace Owners and Admins can send invitations to new members, but they can change who can send invitations to allow everyone (except guests).

Inviting members

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu. Team_Menu.png
  2. Select Invite people. On paid plans, you can also invite guests (read how to do it below).
  3. Enter the email address and full name of the person you'd like to invite. Click Add another or add many at once, if you'd like.
  4. Under Default Channels, click Edit / add to select channels these invitees will automatically join. On paid plans, you have the option to compose a custom message to make your invites more personal.
  5. Click Send Invitations to finish.

Note: Even if members are allowed to send invitations, only Owners and Admins can set default channels.

Inviting guests

On the Standard plan and above, only Workspace Owners and Admins can invite Multi-Channel or Single-Channel Guests:

Multi-Channel Guest
Follow steps 1 through 3 under Inviting members. When asked, choose any number of channels that you want the guest to have access to. Set a time limit for how long the guest will have access to your workspace. When you're ready, click Invite Guests.

Single-Channel Guest
Follow steps 1 through 3 under Inviting members. When asked, choose one channel that you want the guest to have access to. Set a time limit for how long the guest will have access to your workspace. When you're ready, click Invite Guests.

  1. Swipe right to left to open the right sidebar.
  2. Tap Invite People.
  3. Enter email addresses or choose from Contacts stored in your device.
  4. Tap Send to finish.
  1. Tap the   overflow icon in the top right.
  2. Tap Invite members.
  3. Enter email addresses.
  4. Tap Send to finish.
The ability to send a new invitation from a Windows phone isn't currently available, but stay tuned for updates!

Manage invitations

On desktop, you can view your workspace’s pending and accepted invitations and make changes, if necessary.

Revoke Invitation to remove it from your list and prevent any delivered invitations from being used. Resend Invitation to deliver a fresh email invitation to the person’s inbox, in case it expired or was lost.

Here's how:

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu. Team_Menu.png
  2. Select Invite people.
  3. Click See pending and accepted invites for your workspace.
  4. On the Pending Invitations tab, click the  right arrow icon next to the invitation you want to view.
  5. Click Revoke Invitation, Resend Invitation, or do nothing by closing the browser.

Allow email signup

If a Workspace Owner or Admin has turned on email signup, people will be able to create an account on their own as long as they have access to a certain email address format (e.g. your company's domain).

For security, only those with access to an email address at the domains specified by a Workspace Owner will be able to create an account. We'll send a validation link to each new member's email address to verify their identity before they can create an account.

Invitation limits

Slack may limit members' ability to send more invitations if a large number has been sent but very few have been accepted.

If you're using Slack within a company setting and have reached a limit when inviting a large group of coworkers, please contact us.

If you're using Slack outside a company setting, you can avoid hitting the limit by only sending invitations to people who have asked to join your workspace.

Note: Don't revoke invitations in an attempt to lift the limit. Invitation limits are not affected by revoked invitations — they are based solely on the acceptance rate of invitations that have already been sent.

Who can use this feature?
  • By default, Workspace Owners and Admins can invite new members.
  • Available on free and paid plans.
