Desktop notifications

Pop-up desktop notifications help you stay on top of activity in your channels and direct messages. You can choose the activity Slack notifies you about:

  • All new messages
  • Direct messages, mentions, and keywords
  • Replies to message threads you're following
  • Nothing

If you choose to receive no notifications, we'll show a badge on the app icon if you get a direct message or a teammate mentions you or your keywords.

Turn on desktop notifications

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
    workspace_menu
  2. Choose Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Notifications.
  4. Under Notify me about..., choose the type of activity Slack notifies you of.

Note: Your desktop preferences apply to your mobile app by default. To change your mobile preference, check the box next to Use different settings for my mobile devices.

Using Slack for Windows? Follow the instructions above to choose whether to Deliver Notifications via Slack's built-in notifications or the Windows Action Center.

Note: If you're using Windows 10 and notification sounds stop working, check the setting for Windows Quiet Hours. If enabled, notification sounds for active apps are suppressed, including Slack.
