Guide to Slack notifications

Slack can notify you about messages or items that need your attention, whether you're sitting at your desktop or you're on the go.

How Slack notifications work

You'll only receive notifications for channels that you're a member of. If you're mentioned in a channel that you haven't joined, the sender can choose whether or not to send you a notification.

When you're actively working in Slack on your desktop, we'll keep mobile notifications silent — you're already using the app, so we won't bug you. But, when you're away from your desktop, you can be notified on your mobile device about the activity you want to keep up with.

For both desktop and mobile notifications, you can choose the right option for you:

  • All new messages: You’ll be notified for every new message. (We recommend this option only for smaller teams.)
  • Direct messages, mentions, & keywords: You’ll be notified when you receive a direct message or when a teammate mentions you or uses any of your keywords.
  • Nothing: You won’t receive any notifications from Slack.

When it comes to email notifications, you'll only be notified if you're mentioned in Slack or sent a direct message.

You can change your notification settings at any time from the Slack app or from the Notifications page found in your online account.

Note: Badges will also appear in the channel list when you've been mentioned by a teammate.
