Add an app to your team

Slack is most useful when you can see everything your team is working on, even in the tools and services you use outside of Slack. There are hundreds of apps that can help your team work together. Just visit the Slack App Directory to get started!

Add apps through the App Directory

Slack’s App Directory is the best place to find what you are looking for. To access the App Directory:

  1. Click your team name to open the Team Menu.
  2. Select Apps & integrations.
  3. Use the search bar to browse or find a new app, or a service that you already use.
  4. Click the Request to Install button, and follow the directions.

Keep in mind: Anyone can build a Slack app, so choose tools and services you trust. If you suspect that an app is in breach of our API terms and conditions, please let us know.

Tip: Look for the Add to Slack button on the app landing page to add your favorite apps in one click.

Request app approval

Administrators have the ability to approve or restrict apps for the team. Visit Manage apps for your team to learn more about this feature.

If you’ve found an app that you’d like to use but it is not listed as a pre-approved app, you can send a request to install it by clicking the Request to Install button.

If you’d like, you can include a custom message that Team Owners will see along with your request to install the app. When ready, click Submit Request.

Browse your team’s apps

To view the apps your team is currently using, visit the Slack App Directory and click Manage at the top right.

If your team Administrator has the Admin-Approved Apps feature enabled, click the Approved for this Team section in the App Directory to view a full list of pre-approved apps.

Tips for using apps

Because apps can do almost anything, no two work alike. These tips will help you make the most of the apps used by your team:

  • If an app posts a high volume of updates, consider giving the app its own dedicated channel to keep your conversations easy to follow.
  • Many apps include custom slash commands. Learn more about slash commands to perform tasks easily, right within Slack.
  • Some apps use Message Buttons which team members can click to take actions or interact with other services.

Mute an app

Apps like Dropbox or Google Docs can be muted when you copy and paste a link from the service in a channel, and chose the option to Never import those files/links.

If you decide you want to import files from that service in the future, go to the Muted Integrations page at my.slack.com/apps/manage/mutes and click Unmute.

Build an app

If you're interested in building a Slack app, visit our Slack API site to get started. You can always drop us a line with questions, or to let us know what you're up to — we'd love to hear about it.

Tip: If you’re building an app for Slack, you can add teammates as collaborators. They’ll be able to help you build, manage, and update your app.

Who can use this feature?
  • By default, all members except for Guests can use this feature.
  • Available to teams on free and paid plans.
