Emoji and emoticons

Emoji are a spin on common emoticons and they’re great for enhancing your Slack messages. 😎

Tip: Want even more emoji? Respond to messages with emoji reactions or create your own custom emoji.

Add emoji to Slack messages

Add emoji to your messages by typing an emoji code or by selecting from the emoji menu. If you'd like, you can even add your own easy-to-remember emoji codes to use in Slack.

Type the emoji code

Slack uses the standard emoji codes found at Emoji Cheat Sheet — you can type these codes to quickly add emoji to your messages.

If you can't remember an entire emoji code, just type : followed by the first few letters and an autocomplete menu will appear. Select the emoji you want to use, or from your desktop, press Tab to cycle through the list.

  1. Touch and hold the emoji you'd like to use.
  2. Select your preferred skin tone from the pop up menu.

Note: When you type the code for a Slack emoji that also appears in iOS, it will default to the skin tone you've already selected in your iOS keyboard.

  1. Tap the   Overflow menu icon at the top right.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll down and tap Advanced.
  4. Use the Emoji Deluxe option to choose your preferred skin tone.

Apologies, but you're not currently able to set a default skin tone on Windows Phone. Stay tuned for updates!

Note: If you use Google style emoji, you cannot select a custom skin tone.

Change your emoji style

Slack offers four different emoji sets: Apple, Google, Twitter, or Emoji One. The Apple emoji set is turned on for everyone by default. (If you'd prefer, you can also choose to show none of theses sets at all.)

Select a new emoji style

You can change your emoji style in Slack from the desktop app or a web browser:

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu.

  2. Choose Preferences.
  3. Select the Messages & Media tab.
  4. Under Emoji Style, choose your preference.
  5. Click the  close icon when you're finished.
Note: Slack uses Unicode emoji — a standard set of symbols designed with consistency in mind. While we can't modify individual emoji, you can create custom emoji if you feel something is missing.

Send big emoji

By default, if your message or comment contains only emoji, they'll appear larger on both mobile and desktop. (In the case of desktop, this is true when you're using the Clean message theme.)

If you'd like, you can turn off jumbomoji from the desktop app:

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu.
  2. Choose Preferences.
  3. Select the Messages & Media tab.
  4. Under Emoji Style, uncheck the box next to Show JUMBOMOJI.

Note: Slack won't display jumbomoji if your message has more than 23 emoji in a row.

Use emoticons

Slack will automatically change common emoticons to an equivalent emoji. Check out the conversions in the image below.

If you'd rather use emoticons and not have them convert to emoji, you can turn off this feature from the desktop app:

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu.
  2. Choose Preferences.
  3. Select the Messages & Media tab.
  4. Under Convert Emoticons, uncheck the box next to Convert my typed emoticons to emoji so :D becomes 😄 .
