Set up two-factor authentication

You can add an extra layer of security to your Slack account by turning on two-factor authentication (2FA). This requires you to have access to your phone when you log in. This means even if your password is compromised or stolen, only you can log in to your account. 🔐

Here’s how it works:

  • Every time you log in to Slack, you’ll be asked to enter a verification code along with your password.
  • You’ll receive a verification code, either by text message, or from an authentication app on your mobile phone.
  • Enter the code in Slack and you’re done — you’ll be logged in to Slack, but with added peace of mind.

Get started with two-factor authentication

You can choose how you would like to receive your authentication codes. Either by SMS text message or an authentication app of your choice.

SMS text message

Authentication app

Slack will automatically send an SMS text message with your single-use authentication code each time you sign in to your Slack team.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to the appropriate team, and visit your Account page at
  2. Click Two-Factor Authentication, and press Setup Two-Factor Authentication.
  3. Enter your password, and click SMS Text Message to receive authentication codes by text message.
  4. Select your country from the menu, and enter your mobile phone number. Include your area and/or zone code.
  5. Next, we'll send a 6-digit verification code to your device. Enter the code on the Slack 2FA configuration page.
  6. To finish, select Verify Code.

Note: Standard message rates apply. Check with your mobile service provider for information on fees for receiving SMS/text messages.

Step 1 — Download and install an authentication app

Before you can set up 2FA on your account, you’ll need to download and install an authentication app on your device. Slack 2FA can be used with most Time-Based, One-Time Password (TOTP) applications. Here are a few options to get you started:

Step 2 — Enable two-factor authentication in Slack

  1. Sign in to the appropriate team, and visit your Account page at
  2. Click Two-factor Authentication, and press Setup Two-Factor Authentication.
  3. Enter your password, and click Use an app to retrieve authentication codes from the authentication app on your device.
  4. Add a new account. In most apps, you can do this by tapping the + icon.
  5. Scan the QR code by using your device's camera. If you prefer, you can choose to enter the code by hand.
  6. On Slack's 2FA configuration page, enter the 6-digit verification code that your authentication app generates.
  7. To finish, press Verify Code.

That's it! From now on, when you log in to Slack, just open your authentication app and enter a code along with your password.

Two-factor authentication with multiple teams

If you're a member of more than one Slack team, you’ll need to set up two-factor authentication for each account separately.

Copy and paste (don't forget to add your team's Slack subdomain) to enable 2FA for all of your accounts.

Using backup codes

If you lose your phone or have deleted your authentication app, you can use one of your backup codes to sign in. These codes were given to you after you set up two-factor authentication for your account, but you can find them again by going to your Account page at

You can use any one of these codes to log in to your account, but each code can only be used once.

Locked out? If you don't have access to your backup codes, ask a Team Admin or Owner to manually disable 2FA for your account. Team Owners who have lost access will need to contact the Primary Owner.

Using an IRC/XMPP gateway? Your connection will be reset. Visit to retrieve an updated password.
