Direct messages and group DMs

Direct messages (DMs) are ad hoc conversations between two or more members. You can DM one person, or start a group direct message (group DM) with up to 8 other people (9 total, including you!). DMs are best for quick conversations that don't need a whole channel to weigh in.

Tip: When you search in Slack, you'll only see results for direct messages that you're a part of.

Note: It's not possible to delete an entire DM, but depending on your workspace settings, you may be able to delete individual messages

Who can use this feature?
  • All members can send a DM. Single-Channel Guests can be added to group DMs, but they can't start one on their own.
  • Available to workspaces on all plans.
