Change your message display settings

When using Slack on your desktop, you can adjust how your messages are shown: choose a theme and select your additional display options.

Set your display preferences

To change your theme and display options, you'll need to access your preferences. Here's how:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Choose Preferences.
  3. Select the Messages & Media tab.
  4. Check out the Theme and Additional options settings.

Theme

By default, Slack uses the Clean theme. If you’d like to see more messages at once, you can switch to the Compact theme instead.

Compact theme

The Compact theme uses less white space between messages and hides member profile photos for a more condensed view.

Tip: With the Compact theme, you can customize the color you see your teammates' display names. Try typing /color @slackbot 3EB890 — or any 6-digit HTML color value. 🎨

Additional options

You can adjust other message-related settings under Additional Options:

  • Display information about who is currently typing a message
Choose whether to show the “is typing” message when members are typing.
  • Show times with 24-hour clock
    Choose between 24-hour and 12-hour times (e.g. 16:12 or 4:12 PM).
  • Display color swatches next to hexadecimal values
A color swatch will display if you send a message with a 6-digit HTML color value.

Looking to change the size of your text? You can adjust your zoom level in Slack to increase or decrease your font size.
