When using Slack on a desktop app or on the web, there are a few ways you can change how messages are displayed.
Click your team name to open the Team Menu.
Select the Messages & Media tab.
Check out the Message Theme and Display Options settings.
By default, Slack uses the Clean theme. If you’d like to see more messages at once, you can switch to the Compact theme instead.
The Compact theme uses less white space between messages and hides team member profile photos for a more condensed view.
Tip: With the Compact theme, you can customize the color you see your teammates' usernames. Try typing /color @slackbot 3EB890 — or any 6-digit HTML color value. 🎨
You can adjust other message-related settings under Display Options:
Display information about who is currently typing a message Choose whether to show the “is typing” message when team members are typing.
Display real names instead of usernames Choose whether to show full names or usernames in Slack channels.
Show times with 24-hour clock Choose between 24-hour and 12-hour times (e.g. 16:12 or 4:12 PM).
Use font with extended latin character set* Improve the appearance of accented characters.
* If you see issues with text display in browsers, try toggling this setting.
A word on accessibility: We're committed to making Slack a place where you can feel comfortable getting work done. We’re working to improve areas of accessibility, to make Slack more inclusive for everyone. Stay tuned for updates — or, send us a note.
