Manage your language preferences

If you work in multiple languages, the Slack app is available in English, German, French, and Spanish, and you can change your language setting at any time.

The language you select will be the language displayed through most of the Slack app. However, you’ll still see certain workspace-wide and externally-synced messaging in the default language set by your Org and/or Workspace Admins.

Tip: Slack in Japanese is coming soon, with more to come in the future.

Messages and spellcheck

You can use Slack to send and read messages in most languages — just type in the message box using your preferred language, and send!

Note: Slack does not support right-to-left languages, such as Arabic. We hope to include better support for these languages in the future.

By default, your workspace has spellcheck enabled to detect the language you're using and check your spelling accordingly. Misspelled words are underlined in red in the message box.

If you prefer, you can set spellcheck to a specific language, or turn it off entirely. Here's how to do both!

Update spellcheck on your desktop

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu.
  2. Choose Preferences.
  3. Select the Advanced tab.
  4. Under Input Options, uncheck Enable spellcheck on your messages to turn spellcheck off
  5. To change the language of spellcheck, click Automatic by language and select your preferred language from the menu.
Note: If spellcheck is turned on but it's not detecting the language you're typing in, click the Help menu and choose Clear Cache and Restart. Or, send us a note — we're here to help!
