Because you’re already familiar with what Slack is all about (and you've seen the demo), we’ll now show you how to get started. How you proceed depends on how you’ll be using Slack: either as an individual member or the workspace creator.
We’ve built guides for both paths, so simply choose the route that’s best for you:
Members To join an existing Slack workspace, read on!
If you're looking to join your organization's Slack workspace, this section of the guide is for you. As a member, you'll be able to send messages and files to your teammates to get work done in Slack. Onward!
Step 1 — Join a Slack workspace
There are two ways to join an existing Slack workspace: accept the email invitation that you’ve been sent or create an account on the workspace using your company email address. (This option is only available if the Slack workspace allows email signup.)
Accept an email invitation to join. Open the email invitation, and click Join. We’ll guide you along, but we’ll ask you to enter your full name, and display name. We’ll also ask you to choose a password so you can sign in and out with ease.
Join with an approved email address. Some companies allow their employees to sign up on their own as long as they have an approved email address.
To join a workspace this way, you’ll need to know its Slack URL — it would look something like acmeinc.slack.com. Visit your Slack URL, then click create an account — simply follow the prompts to finish!
Find your workspace: Visit slack.com/signin/find, enter your email address(es), and we'll send you sign-in links for any workspaces available for you to join.
Step 2 — Set up your profile
Filling out your Slack profile helps other members learn more about you. We’ll already have the basics from when you created your account, but some workspaces may have included some additional custom profile fields.
Jump to the Edit your profile article on the Help Center for detailed instructions. (Don’t forget to add a profile photo!) 😬
Step 3 — Download Slack's desktop and mobile apps
You can sign in and use Slack from a web browser on your desktop at any time (just go to slack.com/signin). But by downloading our desktop and mobile apps, you can stay signed in to multiple workspaces, have more control over notifications, and stay in sync even when you’re on the move.
For download instructions, click the link for the apps that are right for you.
Synchronized apps: Whatever you do on one device is reflected everywhere — our Slack apps keep your place, letting you pick up wherever you left off. Pretty neat!
Note: If you need to sign out of your account, it's easy to do. Visit Sign out of Slack to learn how.
What's next?
Now that you are set up with a complete profile and Slack apps for your devices, we’ll show you what it looks like to actually get work done in Slack.
Jump to Working in Slackto learn about how to use search, holding meetings with Slack Calls and Videos, and how Slack can make you more productive overall.
