Apply for Compliance Exports

By default, Workspace Owners and Admins can only export messages and files shared in public channels. With Compliance Exports enabled, you can also include data from private channels and direct messages. Read on to learn how to apply, and if approved, turn on Compliance Exports. 

Note: Compliance Exports are only available to workspaces on the Plus plan. If needed, learn how to upgrade your plan.


Step 1: Submit an application

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left. workspace_menu
  2. Select Workspace Settings from the menu.
  3. Click Import/Export Data in the top right, then select the Export tab.
  4. Click apply here.
  5. Select Apply Now, then provide your Company Name and Slack Workspace Name.
  6. When you're finished, click Next. You'll get an emailed contract to review, and Slackbot will notify all Workspace Owners to let them know you've applied for access to Compliance Exports.

Note: Slackbot will message you within one week of submitting your application to let you know if it's approved. 


Step 2: Turn on Compliance Exports

If approved, you can turn on Compliance Exports using the steps below:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left. workspace_menu
  2. Select Workspace Settings from the menu.
  3. Click Import/Export Data in the top right, then select the Export tab.
  4. Choose Enable this feature.
  5. Review the message Slackbot will send to your members. You can add your own custom message if you'd like.
  6. Click Notify and Enable to save your changes.
  7. Select Enable to activate Compliance Exports. Slackbot will immediately notify members to let them know about the change.

Tip: Members can visit Workspace Settings to see message and file-retention policies and if Compliance Exports are enabled. 


What’s included

Compliance Exports include a .zip file containing your message history (in JSON format) and links to private files and thumbnails with a special token attached. Compliance Exports do not include messages from private channels and direct messages sent before the feature was enabled.

Caution: Anyone with the token can access your workspace files. As an extra layer of security for your team’s message history, you can click Revoke All at any time to deactivate all of the active tokens.

Tip: You may need to adjust the message retention policies for public channels, private channels and direct messages from the Workspace Settings page.


Schedule ongoing Compliance Exports

From your workspace's Export Data page, you can choose whether Compliance Exports run on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. You can also run exports on-demand by clicking the Start Export button at any time.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left. workspace_menu
  2. Select Workspace Settings from the menu.
  3. Click Import/Export Data in the top right, then select the Export tab.
  4. Select your export frequency.

  • Workspace Owners can access this feature. 
  • Available on the Plus plan.
