Apply for Compliance Exports

Compliance Exports can be enabled so that messages and files from private channels and direct messages are included in Slack data exports.

Note: Compliance Exports are only available to workspaces on the Plus plan. To learn how to upgrade, read more about switching your plan or billing frequency.

Step 1: Submit an application

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu. Team_Menu.png

  3. Click the Import/Export Data button in the top right, then select the Export tab.
  4. Click apply here.
  5. Click Apply Now on the pop-up window, and provide your Company Name and Slack Team Name.

Note: You will receive a response from Slackbot within one week of your application being submitted successfully.

Step 2: Turn on Compliance Exports

Once you've been approved for Compliance Exports, return to the Export Settings page to enable the feature for your workspace. Here’s how:

  3. Click Import/Export Data in the top right, then select the Export tab.

Members will immediately receive the Slackbot notification, letting them know about the change.

Tip: Members can visit the Team Settings page to learn more about the message and file-retention policies for the workspace, and whether or not Compliance Exports are enabled.

What’s included

Compliance Exports include a .zip file containing your message history (in JSON format) and links to private files and thumbnails with a special token attached. Compliance Exports do not include messages from private channels and direct messages sent before the feature was enabled.

To learn more about how to read Slack exports, visit How to read Slack data exports

Caution: Anyone with the token can access your workspace files. As an extra layer of security for your team’s message history, you can click Revoke All at any time to deactivate all of the active tokens.

Tip: You may need to adjust the message retention policies for public channels, private channels and direct messages from the Team Settings page.

Schedule ongoing Compliance Exports

Unlike Standard Exports, from your workspace's Export Data page, you can choose whether Compliance Exports run on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

Additionally, you can run exports on-demand at any time by clicking the Start Export button.
