Manage apps for your workspace

Workspace Owners can choose to restrict who can add apps to Slack in a few ways:

  • They can limit who can approve apps or integrations.
  • They can restrict installations to only apps listed in Slack’s App Directory
  • They can control which apps are approved for members to install.

Change app permissions

Decide who can manage apps and integrations

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu.
  2. Select Manage Apps.
  3. Click Permissions in the left column.
  4. Toggle Approved Apps on.
  5. Select who can manage approved apps and custom integrations for your workspace.Screen_Shot_2017-09-06_at_3.59.43_PM.png

Decide where apps can be installed from

We understand that security is important, so that's why you can prevent external apps that aren’t available in Slack’s App Directory from being installed to your workspace. Here’s how:

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu.
  2. Select Manage apps.
  3. Click Permissions in the left column.
  4. Toggle Only allow apps from the App Directory on.

Note: Some workspaces may want to prevent slash commands from being used by guest accounts. This can be changed from the Permissions section of the App Directory.

Create a list of approved apps

Workspace Owners (and any others they choose) can control which apps are available to members by creating a list of approved apps. Approved apps will appear in a special category in the Slack App Directory. Screen_Shot_2017-09-06_at_3.56.56_PM.png

If an app isn’t listed in the approved list, members may send a request to install it (if their Workspace owner has enabled this option).

Approved apps

To create a list of approved apps, use the steps below:

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu.
  2. Select Manage apps.
  3. Click Browse at the top right of the App Directory.
  4. Search the App Directory for apps and services you’d like to approve. On each app's page, click Settings, then Approve for Team.

Note: Apps and custom integrations installed before the Approved Apps setting was turned on will stay active, but additional installations will be restricted and members will need to request approval.

Tip: To review the apps available to your members, click Manage at the top right in the App Directory.

Restricted apps

If you'd like to review or reconsider apps that have been restricted, here’s how:

  1. From the App Directory, click Manage in the top right.
  2. Below Restricted Apps, review the list of apps.
  3. Click Approve if you'd like to make changes.

Approve an app request

Apps

When a member requests to add a new app, Workspace Owners (and any members who have permission to approve apps) will be notified by a Slackbot message.

Click Approve for Team to make the app available to members, or Restrict for Team if you don’t want members using it.

Workspace Owners can also review pending app requests by clicking Manage in the App Directory. Clicking Approve will allow any member to install the app.

Note: Before approving an app, visit its App Directory page to learn more about the permissions and OAuth scopes it will have access to.

Custom integrations

Just like apps found in Slack's App Directory, members can also request to install custom integrations (such as slash commands). Keep the following in mind:

  • Members can request one custom integration at a time (e.g., one slash command).
  • Only the person who sends the custom integration request will be able to install it if it's approved.

Workspace Owners can also review pending custom integration requests by clicking Manage in the App Directory, then Custom Integrations. Clicking Approve will allow any member to install the app.

Review app logs

App logs are available to help Workspace Owners and their Admins track which apps have been added, changed, or removed. The logs also note which apps have been approved or restricted if your workspace has the Approved Apps feature enabled.

App logs can be viewed on the Activity Log page, or when you export your workspace’s Slack history.

Who can use this feature?
  • Only Workspace Owners can access this feature.
  • Available to workspaces on free and paid plans.
