How to use the Quick Switcher

As your team grows, you’ll need a quick and easy way to get to move around Slack. With just a few keystrokes, our Quick Switcher lets you jump between conversations, channels, and even workspaces from your desktop.

Open the Quick Switcher

You can pull up the Quick Switcher anytime using keyboard shortcuts, or — for even easier access — you can enable a preference to add it to the bottom of your left sidebar.

Set your preference

If you use Slack on your desktop, you can add the Quick Switcher to the bottom of your left sidebar:

  1. Click your workspace name in the top left to open the menu.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Click Sidebar
  4. Check the box next to Show the Quick Switcher.

Use keyboard shortcuts

You can use the keyboard shortcuts below to open the Quick Switcher on your desktop — even if you've already set the preference to Show the Quick Switcher in your left sidebar.

Mac

K

T (desktop app only)

Windows

Ctrl K

Linux

Ctrl K

Tips: If you're using Slack for iOS or Android, you can swipe from left to right to open the channel list in the left sidebar, and use the Jump to conversation... field up top. It'll work just like the Quick Switcher! 😉

Find a channel

To find a channel, start typing its name. If you’d like your results to show public channels only, type # before you begin entering the channel name.

Note: To help you move around more quickly, channels and DMs you frequent the most, including the ones you've starred, are boosted to the top of your search results.

Open direct and group messages

Start typing a teammate’s name to open a direct message or a group message. You can limit your results to direct messages only by typing @ before entering any names.

Change workspaces

You can use the Quick Switcher to jump to any workspace you’re signed in to. Yes, — you guessed it! — start typing the workspace name to find and select a different one.

Navigate the Quick Switcher

On your desktop, use the Up  ↑ and Down ↓ arrow keys, the Tab key, or scroll through the list. Once you’ve highlighted a channel, direct message group DM, or workspace, hit Enter to jump directly there.
