What is Slack Enterprise Grid?
Enterprise Grid was built with larger organizations in mind. Instead of everyone working in a single workspace, a Slack Enterprise Grid org connects multiple interconnected workspaces across your company.
Unique teams or business units can work online in channels inside separate, dedicated workspaces. Plus, you’ll be better connected through search, direct messaging, and a directory that works across your entire organization!
Organization versus workspace
An Enterprise Grid organization (org, for short!) is made up of multiple Slack workspaces. Org Owners and Org Admins can manage settings and preferences for all the workspaces and members within the org. Here are some examples:
- Security setup (single sign-on, mandatory 2FA, etc.)
- Settings and preferences (message editing and deletion policies, channel management, custom Terms of Service, etc.)
- Member access and management (accounts, user groups, apps, etc.)
- Billing (company details, license agreements, etc.)
On the Enterprise Grid plan, the org's workspaces are similar to those on our other plans, but they have several added benefits.
- Search and direct messaging works across all workspaces.
- With unlimited workspaces, create focused places to work. Connect the essential people, information, and apps for getting the job done.
- Shared channels connect two or many workspaces within the org, making cross-functional communication cohesive and efficient.
Note: Read how to Join and leave workspaces on Enterprise Grid. Keep in mind, workspace access can be Open, By Request, or Invite Only.
Roles and permissions
On Enterprise Grid, all members are connected at the organization level — members need only one account to access multiple workspaces in the org.
- Organization level:
The organization is administered by Org Owners and Org Admins. They are responsible for the org's settings and preferences, and making sure members and guests (Multi- or Single-Channel Guests) can access the right workspaces and channels connected to the org.
- Workspace level:
Individual workspaces within the organization are administered by Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins.

Enterprise Grid features
Find members in the directory
Use the Organization Directory to find anyone on Slack in your org. Read Find members in the directory for more. 📇
Send a direct message to anyone on Slack
You can direct message (or group DM) anyone in your org. Even if you're on multiple workspaces, your DMs are consolidated into a single view, making it easier to keep track of your conversation history.
Search across all workspaces
You'll never have to remember what workspace you saw that file or message in again! Conduct a search from any workspace on Enterprise Grid, and it'll check all workspaces you're in.
Share channels across workspaces
When you need to collaborate cross-functionally, use shared channels to connect two or more workspaces. Org Owners and Admins can create shared channels on Enterprise Grid.
Join and leave workspaces
When you first join an Enterprise Grid org, you can search for workspaces or search for a teammate you work with regularly to see which workspaces they're in. Here's a preview of what new members can expect.
Tip: Can't find the right workspace? Perhaps it's a good time to Request a new workspace on your organization?

When you're working in an Enterprise Grid organization, keep these four guiding principles in mind:
- Search for info
Use the search field to find answers to your questions across your entire organization. You'll save time if someone has already posted the answer you're looking for!
- Use public channels
For the sake of collaboration and productivity, post messages in public channels so others can learn from your work.
- Follow channel naming guidelines
Clear, predictable channel naming guidelines help you ask questions in the right places, connect with the right people, and be more efficient.
- Check channel details
To learn more about a channel, check the channel details: pinned messages or files, channel topic or purpose, or channel highlights.
