Gmail add-on for Slack

With the Gmail add-on for Slack, send emails into Slack channels and direct messages (DMs) directly from your email inbox. 

Supported platforms

  • Gmail on web
  • Gmail iOS and Android apps

Note: Guests in a workspace can only use the Gmail add-on if they have access to Gmail through your company's G Suite for Business account.

 

Step 1: Install the Slack add-on to Gmail

  1. Head to the Slack for Gmail page in the G Suite Marketplace.
  2. Click Install and follow the prompts.
  3. Click Done.

Tip: If you're unable to install the add-on yourself, contact a G Suite administrator at your company for help.

 

Step 2: Connect Gmail to your Slack account

Once the add-on has been installed, connect your Gmail account to a Slack workspace. If you're a part of an Enterprise Grid org, you can connect any workspaces you're a member of.

Note: After you connect from your desktop, you'll see the add-on from your mobile device as well.

Connect Gmail to a workspace

  1. From your desktop, open Gmail. 
  2. Click the Slack icon on the right side panel. If you don't see the icon, open the side panel by clicking the left arrow icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  3. When prompted, open an email. 
  4. Click Authorize Access, then choose an account to continue.
  5. Click Allow to grant the add-on access to your Gmail account.
  6. Click Connect to Slack.
  7. If you have access to more than one workspace, you can choose a different one from the dropdown menu in the top-right. When you've selected a workspace, click Authorize.

Connect another workspace

If you're a member of more than one Slack workspace, or a member of an Enterprise Grid org, you can easily connect additional workspaces.

  1. From your desktop, open Gmail. Then, open an email. 
  2. Click the Slack icon on the right sidebar.
  3. Click Search Channels and People.
  4. Click the  arrow icon below Select a workspace.
  5. Select + Add workspace.
  6. Click Add Workspace.
  7. Open the dropdown menu in the top-right and select a workspace.
  8. Click Authorize.

 

Step 3: Send emails to Slack

Now that you're connected, you're ready to start sending emails to Slack.

Android

  1. Open an email, then click the Slack icon on the right sidebar.
  2. Click Search Channels and People.
  3. Select a workspace from the dropdown menu.
  4. To send the email to a channel, type the channel name and press Enter. Add a message and include attachments, if you'd like. Then click Send to [channel-name].
  5. To send an email to a DM, start typing the name of a person and select their name. Add a message and include attachments, if you want. Then click Send to [name].
  6. Click View to see your email in Slack.

Note: The header and body of an email sent to Slack cannot exceed 1MB, or 30MB when combined with attachments. Emails can include up to 20 attachments.

  1. Open the Gmail app, then open an email.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the email, then tap the Slack icon.
  3. Tap Search Channels and People.
  4. You’ll see your workspace name below Select a workspace. To switch to another workspace, tap the workspace name and select the one you want.
  5. Tap Search Channels and People to search, or select a channel or person from the list. If you’d like, add a message and include attachments along with your email.
  6. Tap Send to [name].
  7. Tap View to see your email in Slack.
  1. Open the Gmail app, then open an email.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the email, then tap the Slack icon.
  3. Tap Search Channels and People.
  4. Select a workspace from the dropdown menu.
  5. Start typing the name of a channel or person, then select it from the dropdown menu. Add a message and include attachments, if you'd like.
  6. Tap Send.
  7. Tap View to see your email in Slack.

Note: The header and body of an email sent to Slack cannot exceed 1MB, or 30MB when combined with attachments. Emails can include up to 20 attachments.

Tip: Emails in Slack are treated as files and will count towards your workspace's file storage limit.

 

Disconnect Gmail and Slack

The steps to disconnect an add-on differ if you access Gmail through G Suite or not.

G Suite

Non-G Suite

  1. Head to the G Suite Apps Marketplace.
  2. If prompted, sign in with your Google account.
  3. Click Manage Apps.
  4. Find Slack, then select Manage > Remove.
  1. From your desktop, open Gmail. 
  2. Click the  gear icon to open Settings.
  3. Select Add-ons.
  4. Below Installed add-ons, select Manage.
  5. Next to Slack, open the  options menu.
  6. Click Remove.

Tip: G Suite Administrators can remove the add-on for their entire domain from the Marketplace Apps section of the Admin Console.

Who can use this feature?
  • All members and some guests
  • FreeStandard, Plus, and Enterprise Grid plans
